Silybum marianum (L.) Gaertn (Asterales: Asteraceae) is an important medicinal plant commonly known as milk-thistle, or St. It contains the flavo- nolignan Silymarin, which is an important bioactive compound with anti- inflammatory and antioxidant effects.Silymarin is a mixture of three flavonolignans, including silybin (silibinin), silidianin, and silichrystin which act as potent antioxidants.
Milk thistle is an annual or biennial herb, originally born in southern Europe and North Africa and other places, in Europe and Africa has thousands of years of cultivation and use history, for folk medicinal plants. Milk thistle is widely used as a treatment for liver disease and cardiovascular disease. China is cultivated in North China and northwest China.
