Lovage (Levisticum officinale) is a sturdy perennial with fragrant fruit and leaves. The dried root is used medicinally. Lovage contains 0.2-2% volatile oil. The principal constituents are lactone derivatives known as phthalides. It has a diuretic effect that flushes out the kidneys and urinary tract. It also displays sedative and antiseptic properties, and appears to combat spasms in the smooth muscles that line the internal organs. The herb's bitter taste stimulates production of saliva and digestive juices.
Functions:
