Description:
Plantain, also known as wheel vegetables, Perennial herbs, with flowering stems up to 50cm. Fibrous root; Stipe, nearly as long as or longer than leaf blade, base enlarged; Leaf blade ovate or elliptic, 4-12cm long and 2-7cm wide, apex acute or obtuse, base narrow petiolate, entire or irregular undulate shallow teeth, usually 5-7 arcuate veins. Stems several, 12 -- 50cm tall, angular, sparsely hairy, spikes 2/5 -- 1/2 of the stem; Flowers light green, 1 persistent bracts per flower, triangular; Calyx 4, base slightly whole, elliptic or ovoid, persistent; Corolla small, membranous, corolla tube ovate, apex 4-lobed triangular, inversely recurved; Stamens 4, borne near base of corolla tube, alternate with corolla lobes, anthers oblong, apex with triangular projection, filaments linear; Pistil 1; Ovary superior, ovoid, 2-locular (pseudo4-locular), style 1, linear hairy. Capsule ovoid conical, mature about lower 2/5 peripherally split, lower 2/5 persistent. Seeds 4-8 or 9, subelliptic, dark brown.Flowering from June to September, fruiting from October.
